Electric Motors Voltage and Balance

When we plan to install an electric motor for our application, the one of  important parameter that we MUST verify is about VOLTAGE.Ensure the voltage is balance between phase to phase.

Motor voltages should be kept as close to the nameplate value as possible, with a maximum deviation of 5 %. Normally motors are designed to operate within 10% of nameplate voltage.

What happen if your voltage variations is large than nameplate voltage? The answer is if  voltage variations larger than motor nameplate voltage,it’s can have several damage effects to the motor on torque, slip, current, efficiency, power factor, temperature, and service life. read more

Troubleshooting Electric Motors – Part 2

This post is a continue from the troubleshooting electric motors part 1.As I mentioned on my last post, I will share information and guideline about electric motors breakdown.

Once it has determined that the motor is at fault, you can proceed to locate the problem with the motor. A troubleshooting guide outlines a comprehensive variety of motor problems.

Generally the categories are arranged according to symptoms, offering brief suggestions concerning what to look for when investigating motor failures and often providing advice on how to correct the problem once it has been identified. read more

Troubleshooting Electric Motors – Part 1

Breakdown causes by electric motor failures always happen in our operation due to of 2 major factors. It is Mechanical component defect and Electrical circuit failure.

Typical instruments used for troubleshooting motor operation problems include a Multimeter, Clamp-on Meter,Insulation Resistance Meter, and Infrared Thermometer. These instruments are used to measure voltage, current, resistance, insulation resistance, and temperature.

But when we involve for electrical testing,it have a risk and can lead to injury or electrical shock. We must aware during handling electric motor and to reduce the risk we need to follow safety procedure to avoid any incident by certain to read more

Electric Motor Maintenance

As we know, motors is a common used for rotating equipment to make domestic and industrial operation more easier. In general, electric motor is reliable machine with minor maintenance require. But to ensure electric motors have a more life span and service life,we must perform periodical inspection and service and schedule it with proper arrangement.

With periodical inspection and services, we can reduce motor failure and minimize downtime for operation.Record all data and finding during inspection for our referral and also can perform diagnostic report.Normally periodical inspection for motor should be such as motor base condition, shaft alignment, bearing condition, motor temperature and belt tension or coupling position. read more

Types Of Motor Enclosures

The main purpose of motor enclosure is to provides protection from environment  impacts such as rain, corrosive, rusty and many more in which motor installed.

This protection can make motor more life span and can running in suitable condition. It also provide a types of cooling system for a motor depend on their types of enclosure.

Before we select a motor enclosures for our application, please review about location, types of environment impact and ambient temperature to avoid any mistaken. read more

Motor loads calculation

On my last post,i discussed about why we need to determine motor loads and efficiency. So for this post i want to share how to get the motor load value using simple calculation electrical formula.

Before we go further,i want to explain about Power. What is meaning of Power?Of course this term is significant with our discussion topic.Power is rated of energy in electrical circuit.

It is combination from Amperage and Voltage value.Basic formula for Power is P (watt) =I(ampere)  x V (volt).Power also measured in Horsepower (hp) unit. For common conversion from electrical Horsepower to Watt is 1hp = 746 watt. read more

Determining electric motor load and efficiency

As we known, the electric motor is the one of important equipment to drive the operation smoothly from beginning to end of product.

Electricity cost normally around 60% came from electric motor running. It become more worth if installed motors are oversized, low efficiency, under design, poor maintenance or mismatched.

So to know the actual motor performance, we need to determine electric motor load and their efficiency to eliminated all problems that can cause the high electricity cost and breakdown.

We need to collected several important data from our electric motor to made comparison and analysis about load and efficiency.
