charging methods for UPS batteries

When we used the power from batteries,it will drop and losses the power performance. It must be charging to full back a capacity of batteries. It must be discharged periodically and charged up back to ensure it will supply enough power supply when needed.

Manufacture have a design suitable charging process for their UPS to ensure it can recharged a battery more faster and prolong the life span.If the charger equipment is breakdown,it can cause the power supply shortage due to UPS cannot deliver the voltage.

UPS batteries charging have a three methods for completed the process.Modern chargers are usually designed to charge a battery in one or more of the following :-

 Design for UPS batteries charging.

1) Float charge

Description for this method mean the battery is connected to its load during charging process.Normally it designed to supply enough current for the battery and the working load and it must running in stable voltage.

When a sudden demand of current occurs the battery and the charger attempt to share the current. However, the demand from the charger may exceed its rating and so the mode of operation then changes to constant current.

Manufacture already recommended for suitable charging voltage applied to the battery during normal demand is about 2.0 to 2.25 volts per cell for Pb cells and about 1.3 and 1.45 volts per cell for NiCd cells.

The reason is to ensure batteries is still full capacity in the battery stable without manual monitoring.Typical charger unit voltage rated around  200 volts and 400 amp.

2) Boost charge

This method process is used for faster charging or restore the capacity of the UPS battery. It normally depend on the heavy load demand. The charging current basically must be much higher than the standard rated.

The voltage will be pick up and stable during boost charging process due to high current flow. That mean the battery becomes charged when the boost current dropped.

When the charging current dropped to a limit setting value,it automatically switching the charger to the float charge mode controlling with the control circuit. It also available for manual and auto mode with selector to easy choose charging mode when required.

3) Trickle charge

This charging process normally only used for PB cells types of battery. The operation for charging current used is so trickle and less than standard rated charging current.

This method is suitable when batteries storage capacity is to low or no more current. It take a long time for charging and only used a small current usage to charging the batteries.

Wow!! Great post! Must say an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a device that allows a computer to keep running for at least a short time when the primary power source is lost. It also provides protection from power surges. Btw @Lemau!! the things you covered through the post are quiet impressive, good job and great efforts. I found it very interesting and enjoyed reading all of it…keep it up, lovely job..

    Absolutely worth to share!!
